Mary Sopchak Koncak

Mary Sopchak Koncak, age 97 of Apex, NC, formerly of Pinellas Park, FL and Binghamton (Chenango Bridge), NY, passed peacefully on June 9, 2024.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 14, 2024, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, from 6-7PM. There will be a short prayer service at 6PM.

Mary was born on January 30, 1927, to the late Peter and Anna Banko. She grew up in Carbondale, PA where she met her beloved husband of 33 years, George Sopchak (Simpson, PA). Together, they raised 2 sons in Chenango Bridge, NY. Over the years, she worked as an administrative assistant for the Sheltered Workshop of Binghamton and the Arthritis Foundation of Broome County.

Mary retired to Pinellas Park, FL, where she resided for 30 years. There, she was an active member of the Czechoslovak Society of America (CSA), serving as Lodge Secretary in St. Petersburg, FL. She enjoyed volunteering at the Friday night bingo in her retirement community, Mainlands of Tamarac.

She was deeply loved by her family and friends, who often referred to her as the sweetest person they had ever known. She was kind and welcoming and put her family above everything else. She was gracious, respectful, and giving to all who knew her.

Mary is survived by her sons, Andrew Sopchak and wife, Jennifer and Matthew Sopchak and wife, Patricia; grandchildren, Kelly Wood and husband, Eric and Duke Sopchak; great granddaughter, Madison Wood; as well as brothers, Nicholas and Peter Banko, Jr.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased in death by her husbands George Sopchak and Frank Koncak, Sr.; brother Andrew Banko; and sisters Anna Stansell and Helen Jubinski.

She will be missed greatly by family and many dear friends.

Interment will be at Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY.
