Matthew Gerald Sutton

Matthew Gerald Sutton, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023. A native of Sampson County, he was born January 12, 1932, to the late William Theodore and Arabella Frances Wiggins Sutton. Matthew was a very tough man, spending much of his life farming. Later on, he was known as the “Pond Man” in Garner for many years, building ponds for people to fish on his property.

Matthew is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ellen Peckham Seagle Sutton; daughter, Marie Sutton Lang (Matthew); sons, James Sutton (Violet Anderson) and Alan Sutton (Melinda); son-in-law, Hampton Beck McLamb; grandchildren, Steven, Stephanie, Amanda, Kathryn, Walter, Joseph, Dylan, and Samantha; and great grandchildren, Audrey, Presley, Adella, and Sawyer; as well as several cousins.

In addition to his parents, Matthew was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura McLamb.
