Michael Sylvan Broder, 78, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Charles Broder and Beatrice Kantrovitz Broder.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dr. Susan Westerman Broder; his children, Elena Broder-Feldman (Mark Feldman); Dr. Joshua Broder (Dr. Pek Chong); and Daniel Broder; and four grandsons, Ethan Feldman, Aaron Feldman, Spencer Broder, and Isaac Broder.
Dr. Broder graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he met his wife Susan during freshman orientation. He went on to receive his M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. A board-certified radiologist, he practiced in Connecticut before moving to Thomasville, N.C. in 1976, where he provided patient care at Community General Hospital for over 30 years and served in leadership for the medical community at both the hospital and county medical society. He took great pride in bringing cutting-edge diagnostic testing to the patients of his small town, including the first CT and MRI scanners. Dr. Broder was also actively involved in his community through the Chair City Players community theater, B’nai Israel Synagogue (High Point), and the Davidson County Toastmasters Club. After his retirement, Dr. Broder relocated to Cary, NC to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Dr. Broder was a man of many interests, but his family was the most important. His greatest pleasure was spending time with them. He loved traveling with his family because he enjoyed sharing his curiosity and love of learning with them. That included epic family trips when his children were young, like a 3-week RV tour of western U.S. national parks, and trips to England, France and Italy, and international travels with his wife Susan in later years. He not only supported his children’s interests, he looked for occasions to join in. For example, when home computers were still a rarity, he joined his children in hand-typing computer programs from magazines. He appeared in a production of Kiss Me, Kate with both his father and son. He built a black-and-white photography darkroom in the family laundry and constructed a reef aquarium with his children. He was thrilled when he became a grandfather, looking forward to sharing these experiences with another generation.
He is remembered with love, and his humor and sense of wonder live on in his children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 3rd, at 10 a.m., graveside at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to his home between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
