Montague Stuart Houlder, Jr.

FORT MILL, S.C. - Montague (Monty) S. Houlder Jr. died peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Tega Cay, South Carolina after a period of failing health. He was the son of Montague and Irene (Keene) Houlder and devoted husband of the late Sarah (Sallie) Chalmers Houlder. Monty was born and raised in Raleigh, NC where he remained a life-long resident. He was a proud UNC Chapel Hill graduate and a loyal Tar Heel. In hopes of converting his non-Chapel Hill family and friends, many would be asked to “bathe under the Carolina blue light bulb” when they entered his home. During his career, he was VP with the IGO Insurance Agency founded in North Carolina in 1970 to provide specialized insurance coverage for the automotive repair industry. He was interested in history, his family genealogy and learning more about his parent’s background in London, England and North Berwick, Maine. Monty was an avid golfer and member of the North Ridge Country Club for many years. He loved the beach and sailing in his younger years, Saturday breakfasts with his friends and tailgating before sporting events. He and Sallie were married for over forty years and happy to make their home on Lake Anne. As Sallie’s health failed, he seldom left her side. Monty and Sallie were dedicated members of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Nancy Altemose. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Houlder, Helen Brown, Marguerite Carlsen, Grace Mathews, Charlotte Boyd and Ruth McGovern and their spouses. Visiting hours will be held at the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 10-11AM, followed by a funeral service in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh immediately following the funeral service. Funeral arrangements are by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home of Raleigh.
