Moyle Hartwell ” M. H.” Green

Raleigh – Moyle Hartwell Green, Jr. (“M.H.” or Papa) passed away August 17th 2018 at the age of 93 in his home in Boylan Heights, Raleigh, NC. M.H. was born in Fayetteville, NC on December 25, 1924 to Moyle Hartwell Green, Sr. and Ada Lawrence Green. In his formative years, M.H. and his family moved to Raleigh where he attended the Boylan Heights School (Project Enlightenment) and Hugh Morson High School before joining the Navy in 1943. He served aboard the USS Rich (DE-695), which was sunk off Utah Beach (Normandy) by mines on June 8, 1944, and received the Purple Heart. After medical leave, he returned to WWII in the Pacific in the battleship USS Texas (BB-35). After the war, M.H. married Marie Lambert and opened M.H.’s Groceteria on W. South St. in Raleigh, which he ran for the entirety of his career. Not one to ever sit still, M.H. continued working throughout retirement on restoring the many properties he acquired in the community he loved so much. An avid, lifelong tinkerer and student, he also enjoyed caring for countless neighborhood plants, cats, and just about anyone or thing he thought needed a helping hand. M.H. was preceded in death by his parents, Moyle Hartwell and Ada Green, his wife Marie Green, his son Donny Green, and many faithful dogs. He is survived by his sister Cathie Ann Bower, daughter Donna Green, ex-son-in-law Rob Ward, granddaughters Jenny Fox (Harry), Mollie Ward (Daniel), Caitlin Ward (Matt), Tara Wilkes and Christina Varble, his great-grandchildren Edan and Conway, his beloved dog Buddy, and numerous friends and neighbors. Family and friends are invited to a graveside burial service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh on Wednesday, August 22, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the SPCA of Wake County or the Arbor Day Foundation. Special thanks to Transitions Lifecare and others for their support.
