Myrtle Gray Jackson DeVaney, beloved mother, Nana and faithful servant of our Lord passed away peacefully in her home April 9, 2025 surrounded by family. She was born December 13, 1934 in Plymouth, North Carolina to the late Raleigh Sherman Jackson and Blanche Davis Jackson. Myrtle is survived by her sons: Wesley (Kristie) DeVaney of Raleigh, NC and Carl (Billie) DeVaney of Middlesex, NC. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren: Chase (Brittney) DeVaney, Reed (Dalton) DeVaney, Caleb DeVaney and Callista DeVaney; great-grandchildren: Eli DeVaney, Alayna DeVaney and Grayson DeVaney. In addition, Myrtle leaves behind her sister, Betty Jean Carr of Morehead City, NC and brother, Jimmy Jackson of Plymouth, NC.
Myrtle was a devoted homemaker and treasured her family immensely. Also, she served in various leadership capacities in the church. While raising a young family, she served at Wake Crossroads Baptist Church. Myrtle loved working in the children's ministry and assisting with church musicals. During her membership at Moncure Baptist Church, she served as an ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher. Her recent membership at Mount Moriah Baptist Church included starting the Living Word Sunday school class, being a fervent prayer warrior, the LLL ministry, the GROW visitation team, ministering to homebound members and leading discipleship studies on occasion. Myrtle's passion for Christ and joy for living were contagious. Throughout the years, numerous lives were touched by her generosity and sincere concern for the well-being of fellow believers. Her spiritual wisdom and guidance were treasured by many.
Before retiring, Myrtle worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. Upon retirement, she followed her dream of moving to the coast. She served as the general manager of Christmas By the Sea in Atlantic Beach, N.C.
Myrtle was a gifted vocalist, avid bird watcher and passionate cook. She gained the most pleasure from serving Jesus Christ. Myrtle will be missed more than words can express by her family and dear friends. The family is forever grateful to Myrtle's amazing in-home caregivers, Amedisys Hospice services and Carla Crumpler, her live-in caregiver the final year. A celebration of life service will be held April 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Mount Moriah Baptist Church 3000 E Garner Road Raleigh, NC 27610. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the various ministries of Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
