Patricia Anne Johnson Maynard

Patricia (Pat) Maynard, a beloved wife, mother, sister, teacher, and friend to many, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul J Johnson, and her mother, Mabel P Hicks. Pat dedicated her life to educating young minds, teaching middle school, and touching the lives of many students.

Born with a love for sports, Pat played basketball in junior high and high school. After earning her degree at Appalachian State Teacher’s College, she began her teaching career at Wakelon School in Zebulon, NC. She coached girls’ basketball in her early years, leaving a lasting impact on her players both on and off the court. Later, she expanded her coaching repertoire to include volleyball, softball, and cheerleading. In the classroom, Pat taught with a passion for learning and a big heart filled with love for all students.

An active member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Garner, Pat participated in small groups and bible studies. She also served as a member of the 200th-anniversary committee of the church, embodying her commitment to her faith community.

In her retirement, Pat found joy in cheering for her beloved Duke Blue Devils in college basketball and football, always supporting her team with passion and loyalty. Her love of sports was cultivated through her middle and high school sports activities. She also enjoyed supporting Upward soccer and was very active in vacation bible school. Pat continued to support young people as they moved beyond high school and returned as productive community members.

Pat is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Donald (Donnie) Maynard, her daughter Mary-Margaret Manlove and husband Matthew, her sisters Paulette Slayton and husband Lacy, and Mary-Gail Ellington. In addition, she had many nieces and nephews and shared grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched throughout her life.

A funeral service will be held  at 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Mt. Zion Global Methodist Church,15772 NC-50, Garner, NC 27529. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday February 26 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner NC 27529. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, designated for the Paul J. Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
