Pat Maddox, 93, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died at Springmoor Retirement Community’s Stewart Health
Center on January 8, 2024.
She spent her childhood in Camden, South Carolina with parents Lillie Belle Evans Maddox and Herbert
Hugh Maddox. She attended Wingate Junior College before getting a teaching degree from Furman
University. She received a master’s degree in education from the University of South Carolina. Pat was
passionate about teaching, which she did for 30 years in Columbia and Raleigh, retiring from Bugg
Elementary School.
Pat was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church for over 60 years, devoting her time and energy to
teaching adult Sunday School.
Everyone who knew Pat knew how much she loved traveling. She took her first trip to Europe during
college and eventually traveled to forty-five countries. She loved taking roadtrips with her children and
she visited forty-four states.
Pat played classical piano into her nineties. She also wrote two booklets of poems. She will be
remembered for her independent spirit and humor.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, son Eric Johnson, and is survived by son Bret Johnson (Jodie)
and grandson William. A public graveside burial will be held Thursday January 11, 2024 at Brier Creek
Memorial Gardens at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to
Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC, 27607 to support their Ministry to
Internationals.
