Peggie M. Franklin

ANGIER – Peggie Lue McLeod Freeman Franklin, 78, passed away Thursday at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. A native of Harnett County she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Lillian Denning McLeod. At age 22 Peggie met and married MSGT R.M. Freeman, USAF. They were stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Goldsboro. Together they lived and worked at SJAFB, Washington, D.C. where she became a US government employee, American Attaché Office in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, Patrick Air Force Base, FL and the American Embassy Attaché Office in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After 20 years serving their country, he retired from the USAF and they made their home in Kinston, NC. MSGT R.M. Freeman passed away in September, 1971. She then returned to Washington, D.C. to continue working for the US Government. Where she met and married Major Sheldon R. Franklin, US Army. Together they traveled for the US Army to Fort Benning, GA, Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Mammoth, NJ, Colon, Panama and Fairbanks Alaska. Upon Mr. Franklin’s retirement they made their home in Cape Coral, FL where she became a realtor. After enjoying retirement for many years, Shelly passed away in October, 1993. Peggie then returned to Angier to live with and take care of her mother, Lillian McLeod until she passed away in July, 1996. Since returning to Angier, she has been a special friend to Billy Ray Yeargin for many years. She was an active member of Angier United Methodist Church, former coordinator for Angier Meals on Wheels. Peggie loved traveling and was an avid golfer. Funeral services will be Sunday at 3:00 pm at the Angier United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Harnett Memorial Park, Lillington. Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Susan Blackwell, Alan Coats, Sandra East, Debbie Finch, Sue Hodgin, Wendy Honeycutt, Diane Hudson, Andy Keith, Ann Keith, Silvia Keith Thrower, Craig McLeod, David McLeod, Joey McLeod, Louis McLeod, Theresa Mcleod, Ronnie McLeod, Britt Meyer, Steven Rhodes, Jill Vann, Terry Waska and a special friend, Billy Yeargin of Angier; In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands, R.M. Freeman and Sheldon “Shelly” Franklin; siblings, Donald McLeod, Mary Frances Coats, Bob McLeod, Ray McLeod, Wesley McLeod, Betty Ann Fisher, Lillian Faye Creech, and Andy McLeod. The family will receive friends at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier on Saturday from 6:00-8:00 pm. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
