Garner- Peggy Pate Howell, 74, died Thursday. A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie and Margaret Pate. Upon graduation from Pikeville High School, she married the love of her life, Ray Howell. Ray was enlisted in the Air Force and they were stationed in Greenville, Mississippi for four years. During this time, their oldest son Tony was born. After returning to North Carolina in 1961, Ray began his career with the state of North Carolina. Their second son, John was born in Raleigh. Peggy was a stay at home mom until John began kindergarten. Active in her community, she was a member of the Garner Womans Club, Lady Civitans and the Trojan Club. Peggy began her career at North Garner Junior High School in 1969 and transferred to the SBI in 1982, retiring in 1995. Upon retirement, she was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her outstanding service to the state of North Carolina and her community. Peggy was in declining health for several years but she and Ray were always doing something. They enjoyed spending time together at the beach. She loved fishing and most sports. The family will receive friends Monday from 11:00am -1:00pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Funeral services will follow at 1:30pm on Monday in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Montlawn Memorial Park. She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her husband of 56 years, Ray Howell; her sons, Tony Howell and wife, Michelle and John Howell and wife, Glenna; her precious grandchildren, Ryne Howell and wife, Nicole, Brittany Howell, Zack Howell and Chad Barnette and wife, Evan; two adorable great-grandchildren, Madison and Crosby Barnette; sister, Marlene Bartlett and husband, Newton and several nephews, a niece and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Pate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Rd., Garner, NC 27529, where she was a member since the church was established, or to the Garner Veterans Memorial, P. O. Box 560, Garner, NC 27529.
