Phillip Herbert Mitchell

Phillip "Phil" Herbert Mitchell, age 76, of Newport, NC and formerly of Garner, NC, died January 12, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 2, 1948 in Wake County, NC to the late Paul Herschel and Leola Beacham Mitchell.

Phil was a dedicated public servant and beloved member of the Garner community, living a life marked by selfless service and passion. He proudly began his tenure with the Garner Volunteer Fire Department on March 29, 1966, and spent nearly four decades there, becoming the Fire Chief in 1982 and the department's first paid Fire Chief in 1988. Phil served the Town of Garner as Fire Chief for a total of 28 years. Phil retired in 2010 after an impressive 44 years of total public service, leaving behind a lasting legacy of commitment and leadership.

Outside of his career, he was an avid NASCAR fan, with a special admiration for Dale Earnhardt, and a longtime member of the Panther Branch Hunting Club. Phil was also instrumental in the development of the Babe Ruth baseball league and the Prep League in Garner, helping to provide opportunities for youth sports in his community.

In his retirement, Phil enjoyed boating, water sports, and spending time at the cottage on the Pamlico River, where he found peace and joy. His passion for service, leadership, and his love for his community will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne Oliver Mitchell; his sons, Tommy Mitchell and his wife, Kim and Brad Mitchell and his wife, Jana; his grandchildren, Jordan, Jacob, Chase, Presley; and his sister, Paula Williams and her husband, David.

Phil and Lynne were married for 26 years and blended their families which added additional children, Holly Jobe (Allen) and Jamey Sherron (Bobby); grandchildren Mariah (Shane), Trey (Mykenze), Anderson, MaKayla (Noah), Maggie (Timmy), Riley and Reagan; and five great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Garner, 601 St. Mary's Street, Garner, NC 27529. His family will receive friends and family following the service in the church.
