Ray Benton Hilliard

Princeton – Ray Benton Hilliard, 89, of Princeton, NC, passed away on July 25, 2023. A native of Johnston County, Ray was born June 23, 1934, to the late Paul Lynn Hilliard and wife, Savannah.

Ray is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, DeAnna H. Little and husband Edward; and grandson, Chad Little. He is preceded in death by sisters, Irma Talton, Irene Hardee, Virginia Mooneyham, Lillie Laub, Della Gower, Eunice Vieva, Barbara Keith, Dorothy Harmon, Pearl Holmes; brothers, Paul Hilliard, Marshall Hilliard.

Ray was a veteran of the United States Navy who honorably served from 1953-1957.

Ray was also an avid lead guitarist and singer who was taught to play by his sister, Pearl at the age of 9. In his early years, he played with many well-known professional artist throughout numerous states. Ray eventually started his own band "The Ballistics Combo" and played until the birth of his daughter, DeAnna. His whole life revolved around music, he continued gathering, playing and singing with friends as often as possible.

A funeral service will be held Monday, July 31, 2023, at1 PM, in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel, 1200 Benson Road Garner, NC 27529. Graveside service will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12-1 PM, at the funeral home.
