GARNER- Alton Ray Godwin, 77, died Thursday at Wake Medical Center. A native of Wake County, he was the son of the late Howard and Pearl Johnson Godwin. He served our country as a member of the United States Army. Then went on as the Assistant General Manager for Payless Markets in Hagatna, Guam for 32 years. He and Rachel where faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church, Garner North Carolina for many years. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 12th, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Garner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be hosting a reception in the church fellowship hall following the graveside portion of the service. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Rachel Johnson Godwin; daughters, Tammy Renee Godwin of Chicago, IL and Cheryl Lynn Godwin of Greenville; son, Anthony Ray Godwin of Tamuning, Guam; sisters, Shirley Jones of Willow Spring and Jean Jones of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Krystal Mitchell and husband, Logan of Houston, TX, Dawn-Marie Bagley and husband, Matthew of Pantego and Ryan Tyler Boyd of Greenville; great-grandchild, Sophie Marie Bagley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Howard Godwin and brother, David Godwin. The family will receive friends Monday, May 11th, from 6-8:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
