Raymelle Carnes Aiken

April 18, 1925 — March 18, 2022

Garner - Raymelle fought a hard fight with dementia and passed away peacefully at her home on March 18, 2022. Raymelle was born in Union County, on April 18, 1925, to the late Raymond and Martha Carnes. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at 2PM, at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road, Garner, NC 27529. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC 27603. The family will receive friends from 1-1:50 PM, prior to the service at the church. Raymelle is survived by her loving husband, Arnold Aiken; son, Forrest Aiken and wife, Elaine, of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Yvonne Spencer, of Concord, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Raymelle was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Lee Davis, Frances Byrd, Lottie Falls, Emma Puntch, and Lois Carnes. Raymelle was a longtime member of Aversboro Road Baptist Church and was a charter member since the church was founded in 1970. Throughout her life, Raymelle worked in banking, with a florist, in the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, at Hudson Belk, at Dorthea Dix Hospital, and for many tax seasons at the Department of Revenue. During her tenure at the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, in the mid 1950’s, Raymelle would sometimes be the only person in the office, and was deputized, to make arrests of those coming in to turn themselves in. This made her the first female deputy in Cabarrus County. During the mid-1960’s, when every town in wake county had its own individual court system, Raymelle served as Clerk of Court for the Town of Garner. The family would like to offer sincere gratitude to the nurses at Heartland Hospice, that provided care and comfort for Raymelle, during the last few months. They would also like to thank the members of Aversboro Road Baptist Church, for the many prayers, support, and meals they have provided. Many thanks, also to the many neighbors and friends that helped in any way they could. A special thank you is extended to Ms. Linda Poole, and longtime friend and member of the church, that showed a Christ-like attitude of service in the love and care she provided Raymelle, whenever she was able to assist. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road, Garner, NC 27529.
