Richard Edward Spencer

CLAYTON- Richard “Rick” Edward Spencer, 51, passed away suddenly on July 22, 2023. Richard was born in Beaufort County, North Carolina. He was the son of Hyman Spencer and Eva Bell.

Richard was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be remembered fondly as someone who could make unexpected friendships in a room full of strangers and welcomed anyone into his loving home. His light shined through his love for baking and crafting custom cakes for his beloved family whom he would bring together any chance he could. Richard’s memory will remain in the hearts of all his friends and family.

Richard is preceded in death by his mother, Eva Bell; and nephews, Johnathan Gibbs, and Aaron Spencer.

Richard is survived by his father, Hyman Spencer; stepmother, Lilly West; his loving husband, Ernest Buchanan; daughters, Annie Buchanan, and Lacey Woodard (Nathan); sisters, Mary Tilles (Douglas), Shirley Dockery (Marty), Tina Niehaus (Rodger) and Amanda West; brothers, Michael Spencer (Melissa), and Joey Jecker; Mother-in-law Shelia Buchanan. The love and joy of his life was being Gigi to granddaughter Aubrey Davis. 12 nieces/nephews, and 10 great nieces/nephews.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC 27529.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Johnston County Animal League, Animalkind.org, or American Cancer Society.
