December 8, 1915 - January 12, 2012 Richard Franklin Wilkes, Sr. passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012. He was born in Hamlet, NC on December 8th, 1915. He graduated from Hamlet High School in 1933, and was catcher for the baseball team. He attended N.C. State, and started with Seaboard Railroad in 1937. He stayed with Seaboard until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Wilkes married Alma Lee Mattox on July 9, 1953. They lived in Raleigh until Mr. Wilkes moved to Pinehurst, NC, following Mrs. Wilkes passing. Mr. Wilkes was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Millbrook United Methodist Church. A lifelong Wolf Pack fan, he was still following Wolf Pack football and basketball, right up until his passing. Graveside Funeral Rites will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 2PM at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Alma Lee Mattox Wilkes, and son, Richard Franklin Wilkes, Jr. He is survived by a son, Doug Wilkes, of Pinehurst, NC, nephew, John Wilkes and his wife, Mimi, of Sunset Beach, NC, and niece, Maria Wilkes of Raleigh, and many other relatives.
