Robert Bernard Matthews, Sr.

Garner – Bernard Matthews, 90, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024. He was born in Nash County, NC to the late Thomas and Menkey Matthews.

Family will receive friends at Highland Baptist Church, 8524 Crowder Road, Raleigh NC 27603 on Thursday, October 17, at 10:00 am with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include his son, Robert Matthews (Janet); granddaughter, Jessie Matthews (Russell Hartshorn); sister-in-law, Barbara Matthews; brother-in-law, Jerry Whitby (Kathy); nephews, Tommy Matthews, Jason Whitby (Brandy), Jeremy Whitby; niece, Cathy Stevens (Mike Capps); great-nephews, Christopher McLamb, Jonathan McLamb (Candice), Jacob and Andrew Whitby; great- grandnephews, Jacob, Bryce, Colin McLamb; great-grandniece, Avery McLamb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Horne Matthews; brother, Kay Matthews and sister, Marie Matthews.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh for the care they provided Bernard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh or Highland Baptist Church of Raleigh.
