CHALYBEATE SPRINGS– Robert Earl Stephens, 77, passed away at his home on Thursday. Born in New Hanover County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Irene Snipes Stephens. Earl was a graduate of Campbell University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history. He retired after 32 years of employment as an underwriter with Nationwide Insurance in Raleigh. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #258 A.F. and A.M. in Fuquay-Varina. Earl was a longtime member of Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed spending time with his “Bojangles Social Club” at Bojangles in Fuquay-Varina. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 20th at 3:00 PM at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Fuquay-Varina. Earl will lie in state on Saturday, September 19th from 2:00-5:00 PM for anyone that would like to pay their respects and sign the register. No family will be present during this time. Social distancing and the wearing of a mask is encouraged. Earl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Harriette M. Stephens; aunt and uncle, Eloise and Wiley Snipes; his constant kitty cat companion, Coonie. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Robert Alexander Stephens and his sister, Patsy Stephens Arnold.
