Robert Granger Jessup, 88, of Raleigh, NC passed away on Saturday at his home in the presence of his family. Bob Jessup was born in Mocksville, NC but moved with his family to Eau Gallie, Florida where he grew up on the Indian River. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 during WWII, served until 1946 and was in the reserves until 1959. He was in the Naval Officers Training V-12 program at Georgia Tech and graduated there in 1948 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, he began work with the Soil Conservation Service, US Dept of Agriculture in Orlando and later Gainesville, Florida. He moved to Raleigh, NC in 1968 and worked as State Engineer for The Soil Conservation Service until his retirement in1986. After retiring from SCS, he served as a consultant for the Agricultural Extension Service at NC State University.Bob had a lifelong love of fishing both in Florida and North Carolina and enjoyed many trips to the NC coast at Salter Path starting in 1970. Mr. Jessup is survived by his son, Steven G. Jessup of Raleigh; daughter, Janet J. Rakes of Raleigh; and two granddaughters, Lauren Rakes and Kristin Rakes both of Raleigh. He was predeceased in 2005 by his wife of 52 years, Sarah Calhoun Jessup. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 15, at 2:30 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home Chapel, 831 Wake Forest Rd., Raleigh, NC. The visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Immediately following the service, there will be an interment with Military Honors at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Wake County or to the Alzheimers Association.
