Ruth Daughtry Dupree

Ruth Daughtry Dupree of Garner, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the age of 81. Ruth died peacefully at home, encircled by her loving family. She was married to her beloved husband, Alex Walton Dupree, Jr. for 52 years.

Ruth was born in Clayton, North Carolina, on November 10, 1941, to the late Tiney and Irene Daughtry. Ruth had two brothers and two sisters.

Ruth worked faithfully for the State of North Carolina for 34 years, retiring in 2000 from the Department of Correction. For her extraordinary service to the State, she was also awarded the prestigious honor of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the Governor of North Carolina in 2000.

Ruth was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She enjoyed and genuinely wanted to be part of each moment, event, and life stage of those she held most dear. She will be remembered as someone who asked so little, but gave so much.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alex Dupree, Jr.; brothers, Billy and Leon Daughtry; and sister, Jean Woodall. She leaves to grieve her loss and cherish her memory, daughter, Tammy Dupree Penny and husband, Jeff of Apex; stepdaughter, Melanie Dupree Policke and husband, Tim of Forest, Virginia; four grandchildren, Stephen Michael Policke and his wife, Mikayla, Rachel Ann Policke, Nicholas Payton Penny, and Mackenzie Dupree Penny; and sister, Doris Daughtry Watson of Knightdale.

Our heartfelt thanks to Carlene Gordon for the special care, love, and friendship she shared with Ruth, and her husband Alex, as well as our entire family over the final six months. Further thanks and appreciation to the healthcare team of Duke Hospice for the loving care they provided as well as the many live-in caregivers and hospice staff.

In appreciation, as an alternative to flowers, donations and memorials may be made on behalf of Ruth and her family to Duke Hospice and/or to the NC Chapter of the ALS Association to support the discovery of effective treatments and cure for ALS.
