Ruth Gregory Stearns, 92, passed away on Saturday, February 11. Ruth grew up in Newton Grove, North Carolina. She attended Saint Guadalupe Catholic School and Church. She moved to Virginia during WWII to work in the shipyard. Soon after, she met her future husband, Raymond Stearns. They made their permanent home in Raleigh, North Carolina. She worked for Southern Bell and retired after twenty-seven years. She was active in her church. She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Martha Stearns Carrara (Joseph) of Raleigh, Shirley Stearns Smith (Andre) of Cary, and Joan Stearns Sferruzzo (Dave) of Apex; a brother, Cecil Gregory, of Grantham; sisters, Mary Willis of Chesapeake, VA, and Katie Benton of Raleigh; 5 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her pet bird, Tweety. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, February 16, at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 PM on Wednesday, February 15, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh. There will be a prayer service at 7 PM.
