GARNER- Sallie Smith Lane, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday at her home, with her son (Luby) by her side. A native of Wayne County (Hood Swamp) , she was the daughter of the late Luby Dean Smith and Lillie Butts Smith. She was a loving, devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother as well as a devoted member of Garner United Methodist Church. After more than 20 years of service, she retired from NCSU. She enjoyed her beach home and fishing with her family on Scotch Bonnet Pier at Surf City, sharing most of her catch with her church. Of her joys in life, her biggest was doting on and spoiling her four granddaughters. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Garner United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Allen; sons, D.J. Lane II and Luby Lane, all of Garner; grandchildren, Michele Lane Allen (Brian) , Misty Joe Jackson (Jody), Jennie Locklear (Calvin) and Sallie D.A. Stephens (Jason); great-grandchildren, Bryson Allen, Allen Jackson, Hayden and Emalin Locklear, Blake and Jesse Stephens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband of 57 years, David James Lane, Sr. and daughter- in- law, Pat Lane, and three siblings. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home.
