Samantha Lynn Crompton-Owens (age 41) passed away at home on Saturday morning, June 9, 2018. Sam was born August 7, 1976 as the middle child of Rick and Linda Crompton. Born and raised on rural family tobacco farmland on the Lee/Harnett County line in Broadway, NC, she enjoyed a childhood spent playing with her Cox cousins who lived next door and of course her kid brother Jason and older sister Jennifer. Far from being a tomboy, she enjoyed dance and played in the marching band. After graduating from Lee Sr. High School in 1994, she attended UNCW where she met her husband Will and obtained a Chemistry degree in 1998. After marrying in 2002 in Pine Knoll Shores, NC, Sam Will postponed starting a family for 8 years while they enjoyed marriage and each focused on their careers. Sam earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from Campbell University and launched a successful career at Duke Clinical Research Institute and then at P.P.D. for the last 10 years. 2010 brought the arrival of Sam’s only child, Zachary David Owens. Zack was the light of Samantha’s world, and she embraced all that motherhood had to offer, including the PTA, sleepovers and soccer games. Whether in a boardroom, on a conference call, or in a family meeting, Sam was a blunt force to be reckoned with, who was never afraid to speak her mind. Whether in her professional life or personal life, you knew where Sam stood on any given topic. She loved the Carolina Panthers, Duke basketball, Pottery Barn and 31 Bags. Few things brought Sam more happiness than soaking up sun on Emerald Isle or cruising the intracoastal waterway. Though her last 19 months revolved around cancer, and though her battle displayed a level of grace, courage, and grit that served as an inspiration to many, her life is NOT defined by cancer, and cancer SHALL NOT define her memory. Her life is one that was well lived and is defined by unsurpassed tenacity, ambition, and spunk. If you knew Sam, you are better off because of it. Sam is survived by her husband of 15 years, Will Owens; 8 year old son Zachary; parents Richard Linda Crompton of Broadway, NC; brother and sister in law Jason Jamie Crompton of Broadway, NC; sister and brother in law Jennifer Tommy Howard of Broadway, NC; her paternal grandmother Carol F. Crompton of Aurora, Ohio; father and mother-in-law John Deloris Owens of Oxford, NC; sister and brother in law Heather Reid Daniel of Oxford, NC; nephews Nicholas Howard, Tanner Howard, Jackson Crompton, Tim Daniel, Cody Daniel; and niece Emma Daniel. A public memorial service will be Wednesday June 13th at 2PM in the chapel at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home on Wake Forest Rd. in Raleigh. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.bryan-leefuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, Sam asked that donations be made to KidsCan! which is a special family support program of the Rex Healthcare Foundation designed for families with young children, who have a parent, grandparent or caregiver who has been diagnosed with cancer.
