ANGIER – Sammie Newton Jones, 94, passed away at his home on Monday with his loving children by his side.
Sammie led a full life. He volunteered for the Army after graduating from high school in 1947, serving in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served as a Jumpmaster with the 82nd Airborne Division and was awarded a Bronze Star in 1969. He served his country honorably for 20 years with the military before joining USAID in 1968, where he served for 25 years. His service in the Army as well as his work with USAID frequently had him and his wife traveling and living in many parts of the world, including Europe, Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.
He was a devoted, loving husband and father and doted on his grandchildren. When he finally retired, he joined his wife Doris and settled in Angier to be close to family and to watch his grandchildren grow up. Though not a particularly religious man, he helped his wife and others as they worked to establish St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Fuquay-Varina, acting as a chauffeur or unpaid labor when needed. He kept busy working around the house and yard, frequenting the gym almost daily.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014 which he fought for years and did not let it interfere with his life before its progression made it impossible to function normally.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Jones of Angier; son, Wayne Jones of Angier; daughter-in-law, Priscilla Jones of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jessica Jones of Raleigh, and Jacob Jones of Raleigh, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Sammie was preceded in death by his wife, Doris S. Jones; mother, Maud Jones; father, Chris Jones; and his son, Jeffrey Jones.
Friends and family will gather to memorialize him with military honors at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Angier, Sunday, November 19th at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607 or to michaeljfox.org for Parkinson’s research.
