Sandra Lee Owen

d. May 15, 2012

ANGIER - Sandra Lee Owen, 68, passed away peacefully at home after an extended illness on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. She was surrounded by her loving family. A Michigan native, Sandra lived in various parts of the country during her life. She and her family moved to NC in 1983, living in Cary for many years before settling in Angier in 1997. Sandras greatest joy in life was her family; she was a very devoted and loving wife and mother. She was passionate about giving back to the community; helping at the local Angier Food Bank, teaching reading skills to adult workers at Dorothea Dix Hospital, volunteering with AARF, a local no-kill animal shelter and rehab center. With her husband, Sandra established the Hubert L. Owen and Sandra L. Owen Scholarship Fund at NC State, her husband and sons Alma Mater. Sandra loved to travel with her family and friends, especially fond of cruise ships. At home she was an avid reader and loved to play Scrabble, earning her the title 'Scrabble Queen.' She cherished her time with her three best friends and the monthly bridge games they played together for over 25 years. She and her husband also enjoyed the friendship of their wonderful Angier neighbors with Friday night dinners and trips to the beach together. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Hubert L. Owen, Jr.; daughter, Laura Barrett of West Hollywood, CA; son, Brent Barrett of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren. Dillyn Herrera of Chicago, IL; Megan Harkey of Fayetteville, NC and Brandon Barrett of Fayetteville, NC. Memorial contributions may be made to AARF (Adolescent & Animal Resource Fund), 555 Goosehole Road, Benson, NC 27504. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier, NC.
