Sefater Gbashi

Dr. Sefater Gbashi, age 37, died on Saturday, August 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, friends, and family. Born on January 18, 1987, in Benue State, Nigeria, to David and Comfort Gbashi, Sefa's life was marked by a deep dedication to his family, his faith, and his scientific pursuits.


Sefa is survived by his beloved wife, Sarem Targuma, and their cherished daughter, Emma Mimi. He is also mourned by his mother, Comfort, his brothers, Samuel and Ngutor, sisters, Maranatha and Queen, his father-in-law, Peter Ter, and his mother-in-laws, Charity Ter, Amina Targuma, brother in laws and sister in laws.


A devoted husband, loving father, and steadfast friend, Sefa was first and foremost a man who loved God. Growing up in a Christian household, from the time he was little he thought deeply about things outside of this world and came to know the Lord at a young age. A devout Christian, Sefa loved the Lord Jesus, and his faith was a guiding force throughout his life. In addition, he steadfastly used his scientific skills and made much contribution in the enhancement of food safety, food quality and analytical chemistry. He dreamed of being able to create methods whereby all people throughout the world could have nutritious, safe food. Not only was he committed to the scientific community, but he also was a dedicated son. uncle, a loyal friend, a respected colleague and mentor to countless others. Sefa’s humility and perseverance were evident from his early years working diligently on his family’s farm while excelling in his studies. He worked long laborious hours digging manually and transporting crops to then go home and judiciously complete his assignments. After earning his PhD in Food Technology, he then went on to do a Postdoctoral position and was a part time lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. During his 10 years in South Africa, Sefa and Sarem got married. They then migrated to the US with hopes of starting their new lives and careers. He had just begun working as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the FDA/USDA.


Sefa graduated from University of Agriculture, Makurdi in Nigeria with a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology and later earned his MS. and PhD from University of Johannesburg in South Africa. His academic contributions include numerous published articles, and he was known for his exceptional work in both research and teaching. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer, Sefa's impact on the scientific community was substantial. His mentorship and passion for science will be deeply missed by students, colleagues, and supervisors alike.


Sefa was preceded in death by his father, the Reverend David Gbashi.


The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Medical University of SC, Harbor City Church of Charleston, Summit Church, and all the family and friends who have provided support during this difficult time.


Sefa’s passing is a significant loss to the scientific community and all who knew him. His legacy of compassion, intellect, and dedication will continue to inspire and be remembered with great respect and affection. He leaves behind a young wife and baby.
