Garner - Shirley Fitzgerald Danuski, 73, of Garner, NC, passed away Saturday peacefully at her home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 30, 1942, in Warren, PA, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Carolyn Fitzgerald. She leaves a lasting legacy including her husband of 55 years, James J Danuski; daughters, Sheryl Ray (Burnie) of Apex, NC, Laurie Amig of Apex, NC and Amanda Danuski of York, PA; grandchildren, Crystal Ray Borrelli (Chris), Lauren Ray, Dylan Amig, Austin Amig; great granddaughter, Madison Beckwith; brother, Thomas Fitzgerald (Joanne) of Pittsfield, PA; several nieces, nephews and countless friends. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Saturday at Holland’s United Methodist Church, Raleigh. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM. Shirley graduated from Youngsville High School in 1960. Following graduation, she began working for the Social Security Administration in Jamestown, NY, Florence, SC and finally York, PA when she retired in 1990. Feeling too young to be “retired”, she went back to school to earn her certificate in paralegal studies. She then worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services until 2005. Upon moving to Garner for retirement, she served on the Board of Directors for Garner Area Ministries and volunteered at the Wake County Library in Garner. Shirley had an unwavering faith in God and was very active in her churches. She was a member of Busti Church of God, Jamestown, NC and St Paul’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Red Lion, PA, where she was a member of the choir. When she moved to NC, she joined Holland’s United Methodist Church in Raleigh, where she continued to sing in the choir and volunteer in many areas of the church. Shirley was always on the go and never turned down an offer to gather with her family and countless friends. She wanted to get every moment out of life that she possibly could. In 1995, she made a lifelong dream come true and bought a beach cottage, “The Spray” on Topsail Island, NC. She loved her time at the beach and sharing her house with friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Shirley can be made to Canine Companions, 4989 State Route 37, East Delaware OH 43015 or Holland’s UMC Music Department, 9433 Ten Ten Rd, Raleigh NC 27603.
