Shirley Myers

April 6, 1935 — February 6, 2023

Shirley Lee Myers, 87, of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully February 6, at home surrounded by her family.

Shirley was born in Raleigh to Nathan and Florence Lee on April 6, 1935. She grew up traveling the state as her parents’ occupation as mill workers required. As a teenager, she caught the eye of a gentleman who knew she was “the one.” She married James (Jimmy), the love of her life, at age 19. A full life of loving, serving, mothering, traveling, and homemaking would fill her coming years.

She was skilled in money management, and in the 1950’s, was promoted to an accounting position at Lerners, a Raleigh dress shop. She delighted in a little friendly competition, whether it be at the local ladies bowling league, or the kitchen table playing Phase 10 with her family. Being fully dedicated to the interests of her adventurous husband, she joined him on many rides during their time as members of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club. When children came along, it was decided that she would remain at home to care for them. For most of her life, and up until her death, she devoted her time and energy as a faithful caregiver to family members, including most especially, her surviving husband of 68 years. She was a true gift to all who were blessed to be in her care. Shirley was a lifetime member of the Church of God, where singing in the choir was her great joy. Weekly, for 20 plus years, she and Jimmy served the people of the Carriage House in downtown Raleigh, providing a service where the elderly could hear God’s word and worship from the comfort of their home. Shirley led the music with pleasure and loved the people well.

Her family has always raved about her fabulous cooking. She sprinkled love in every dish, and always served up even the simplest of meals with her whole heart. Her caring hands have busily blessed a multitude. Her contagious laugh and beautiful smile have been etched on the fabric of our hearts. The memories are like the roots of the giant tree in her front yard, deep and wide.

Shirley is survived by her husband, James (Jimmy); sisters Alice McLamb of Glen Allen, VA and Dorothy Perry of Raleigh, NC; Sisters-in-law Margaret VanBuren of Raleigh, NC, Janice Lott of Garner, NC, and Joyce Albin of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Debbie Cash and husband Stephen of Raleigh, NC; son, Jim Myers of Archers Lodge, NC; Granddaughters Kristen Williams of Dunn, NC and Melissa Grissom of Apex, NC; Grandson Corey Myers of Zebulon, NC; 9 great grandchildren; and many precious nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 1pm Wednesday at Capital City Church of God. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 am – 1:00 pm before the service.

A service of Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh.
