Stanley Leon ” Skip” Caton

August 23, 1926 — May 18, 2017

RALEIGH - Stanley Leon Caton (“Skip”) passed away on May 18, 2017 at the age of 90. He was born on August 23, 1926 to Walter Lee Caton and Brennie Workman Caton. Skip was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in World War II, where he was stationed in Rome, Italy, and in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jean Ruth Caton. Skip was a member of the St. Andrew’s Society of North Carolina, the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, the National Society of the Sons of the Revolution, and a charter member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Jim Hunt in 1989 for his work on the North Carolina Museum of Art. Skip was a talented artist, who excelled at both drawing and photography. He also enjoyed Italian food from his and his late wife Jean’s favorite restaurant, Casa Carbone, and was more technologically savvy than most of his children and some of his grandchildren. Skip’s warmth, charm, and sense of humor were magnetic – he never met a stranger. More than anything, he relished spending time with his growing family. We could not ask for a better father or grandfather. Skip is survived by his children, Stan Caton, Jr. (wife Debbie), Asheville, NC; Sally Melissa Caton Doster (husband Roy), Raleigh, NC; Mark Caton, McGee’s Crossroads, NC; Ethan Caton (wife Rashmi), Fuquay-Varina, NC; granddaughters Elspeth Hobbs, Anastasia Caton (husband Jarrod Rainey), Caroline Caton (Mark Dillon), Lara Caton, and Supriya Caton; and great grandchildren Elaina Jean Caton, Ashton Dillon, Mark Dillon III, and Mary-Elizabeth Dillon. Graveside service is at 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Alzheimer’s North Carolina, Inc., and American Heart Association of Eastern North Carolina.
