Raleigh – John Stuart Hough, 85, passed away on Saturday, January 17. Stuart was the son of Ernest P. and Florence S. Hough. He grew up in Raleigh, graduating from Broughton High School. Stuart is survived by his sister Mary H. Coleman of Fairview Park, Ohio, nephew Warren Coleman of Lakewood, Ohio, and niece Susan Ray of Biloxi, Mississippi. He also has two daughters, Nancy Hough Jenkins and Joan Hough Jackson, by his former wife Dolores Helms. Stuart’s sister Mary and their mother were both graduates of St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, where Stuart’s grandfather taught. Stuart worked in radio and held other jobs but his passion was acting. He was one of the two older men in the famous “rocking chair” political commercials during recent senatorial campaigns. He also had a part in the movie Main Street with Colin Firth, which was filmed in Durham. His other interests included scuba diving, commercial and video photography, ballroom dancing, and history—particularly the Civil War and Confederate Navy. Stuart was a loyal member of St. George’s Anglican Church, where he loved to sing in the choir and also served on the Vestry. A funeral Mass will be held on President’s Day, Monday February 16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church, 1210 Dixie Trail, Raleigh. A visitation will be held immediately after the service in the Parish Hall at St. Georges. Inurnment will be at Historic Oakwood Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memorials in Stuart’s honor can be made to Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh or to St. George’s Anglican Church.
