COATS– Sue Carol Johnson Thornton, 74, passed away at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn on Tuesday. She was the daughter of the late James Dewey and Mary King Johnson. As an adult, Sue retired from the K-Mart Corporation after working for 33 years as an accountant. Sue was a native of Angier and spent much of her life living in Raleigh. Following retirement, Sue and Pete moved back to Harnett County to reside in her parents’ home. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, James “Pete” Wilbert Thornton; son, James Douglas Thornton and wife, Liz of Santa Clara, CA; sister, Shirley Johnson Weaver of Dunn; grandchildren, Carolann Kalanipua Thornton, Emilyann Ewalani Thornton and Asheyann Ipolani Thornton all of Henderson, NV; great grandchildren, Jazlyn Leilani Rivera and Jordan Michael-Kehlani Whitfield both of Henderson, NV. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her son, David Lynn Thornton; sister, Margie Johnson; brothers, Charles, Gerald, Glenn, Bobby and Billy Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier. The burial will follow at Coats City Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 1:00-1:45 PM. Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to Erwin Advent Christian Church, 600 S. 15th St. Erwin, NC 28339 in Sue’s memory.
