Raleigh – Susan Adair Werness, 63, died Monday. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Ronald and Bessie Adair Smeaton. Susan earned her Ph.D. in bioengineering from The University of Michigan and her B.A. from Carleton College. She worked for many years as a bioengineer for the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, as well as a professor for Kaplan University and as an educator for Educational Testing Service. Graveside services will be Friday at 1:00 pm at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. She is survived by her husband Steve Werness; daughters, Kristin Werness of Los Angeles, California, Kari Lockhart and husband Chad of Durham; brother-in-law, Mark Werness and wife Val of South St. Paul Minnesota.
