Terry Duane Harris

Terry Duane Harris, age 86, was called home July 14, 2022. Terry was born in Thornwood, West Virginia in 1935 to Maxine Harris. The family eventually moved to Cumberland, Maryland, and later to Washington, DC before he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Terry lived in Haymarket, Virginia from 1977 – 2020. From 2020 to 2022 he lived in Garner, North Carolina with his wife Annetha, Dustin (son), and Autumn (daughter-in-law). Terry was a proud United States Marine veteran serving from 1954 – 1958 and US Marine Corp Reserves from 1958 - 1962. Following the Marine Corp, he worked at the Interstate Commerce Commission, and for the United States Air Force as a Budget Analyst from 1962 - 1992 at Andrews Air Force Base. Terry loved serving his Country. A Mountaineer and survivalist, he had an extensive knowledge of organic gardening, trees, and plants. He enjoyed the mountains, cycling the C & O Canal, history, camping, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. A protector and provider, many sought his wisdom. Terry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Verna Annetha (Whittaker) Harris; his brothers-in-law Albert E. Whittaker II and family of Alexandria, Virginia and Rick Whittaker and family in Henderson, Nevada; sisters-in-law Brenda McMahon of Manassas, Virginia, Karen Whittaker of Pound, Virginia, and Sonia Whittaker of Henderson, Nevada; his son Duane A. Harris (Julia), and granddaughters Ada and Clara of Milledgeville, GA; his son Dustin A. Harris (Autumn), grandchildren Rosa, David, Kaitlyn, and Ryan of Garner, North Carolina, and great grandson Max. He will be buried at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina, following services on Tuesday July 26, 2022, at 12:00 p.m.
