RALEIGH - Thomas "Tom" Jacobs, oldest son of Virgil and Eleanor Jacobs, was born in Kankakee, Illinois. His family later moved to Danville, Illinois where he graduated from Schlarman High School, and entered the University of Notre Dame majoring in Chemical Engineering. The first week of college he met his wife, Charlotte LePetit and they were married in 1956. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force and served three years at Robbins Air Force Base in Warner Robbins, Georgia where he received a commendation medal for his work in ultrasonic cleaning of military aircraft.
In 1967 Tom joined Allied Signal in Hopewell, Virginia, later becoming the plant manager of the facility in Moncure, North Carolina. In 1990 he and his wife traveled to France where he was commissioned to oversee the duplication of the Moncure facility. They returned to Raleigh in 1994, and he retired from Allied Signal in 1995.
Tom enjoyed golfing and loved the outdoors and his log cabin on Lake Gaston where he spent many hours fishing, water skiing, and enjoying the company of friends and family. He volunteered for 16 years as an EMT at the Six Forks Rescue Station, as a caregiver for the St. Francis of Assisi ministry, and a volunteer at Catholic Parish Outreach Food Pantry. He was one of the founding members of the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Eastern North Carolina. His life was dedicated to “God, Country, Notre Dame”.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother, Bruce, and sister, Sylvia. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlotte, children Cathy Allen (Mike), Michael Jacobs (Donna), Sue Veasey (Johnny), and Dan Jacobs (Becky), 9 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
