Thomas Hill Davis passed away on September 29, 2012. He was born January 3, 1926 in Rocky Mount, the son of the late A. D. and Louise Hill Davis. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Meriwether in the Pacific Theatre during WW II. Tom graduated with a B.S. in Commerce from the University of North Carolina in 1948, where he was a brother of the Alpha Tau Omega Order. He was a Tar Heel born and bred. Tom was Chief Commercial Underwriter for Nationwide Insurance for 29 years. Prior to joining Nationwide, he was Casualty Superintendent for USF&G. He served as President of the Eastern Carolina Chapter of the Charter Property and Casualty Underwriters. He was a founding member and first Secretary of the Triangle Insurance Institute. He was also President of the Sir Walter Kiwanis Club. For 63 years, Tom was a dedicated member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church. He was an active participant in the Townsend Couples Class where he served as a Sunday school teacher and class president. Neighbors will remember with pleasure Toms beautiful rose garden, which he tended for 52 years. Tom was an avid golfer and bridge player. He was especially fond of dancing with his wife, Margie, and served as President of Club XVII and the 101 Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Margie Perry Davis. Tom was a devoted and caring husband, patient and supportive. His love for Margie is an inspiration to all who knew him. In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by two sons, Thomas Hill Davis, Jr. and wife Dee Wilson Davis of Raleigh and Dr. Stanley Wayne Davis and wife Kathryn Wyatt Davis of Sanford. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Hill Davis, III and wife Eleanor Scott Davis of Winston-Salem, Alexander Erwin Davis of Columbia, S.C., Julia Hadley Davis of Washington, D.C., Hunter McDowell Davis of Raleigh and Victoria Montgomery Davis of Sanford. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, N.C. 27608 or to a charity of ones choice.
