Thomas Sterling Martin, 94, died Tuesday, December 27, 2016. He was born in Raleigh to the late, Thomas Jackson Martin and Lena Esther Hamlett. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant with the Combat Engineers, landing at Normandy and continuing in the European theatre until the end of the war. After leaving the Army, he attended UNC Chapel Hill and was an avid Tar Heel. Tom was employed by Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing Company for 35 years. During his life he served as an Elder and Deacon in the Presbyterian Church and most recently was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh where he attended the Vanguard Sunday School Class. Tom was a Paul Harris Fellow in the North Raleigh Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Jessup Martin and daughter Alice Elizabeth Martin Wilson and her husband Robert Lee Wilson Jr. He is also survived by his granddaughter Katherine Sterling Wilson, and grandson, Robert Lee Wilson III and his wife, Jacqueline Linker Wilson. A memorial service will be held in the mausoleum chapel at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, N.C. at 11:00AM on Saturday, December 31, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at The Oaks of Mayview in Raleigh for their care and kindness.
