GARNER – Charlie Clarence Sessoms, Jr. passed away on October 11. Mr. Sessoms was born and raised in Ahoskie, NC. He graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1952 and received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1956. He also received a professional degree from the Bureau of Highway Traffic at Yale University in 1961. He progressed through several positions with the NC Department of Transportation, after serving two years active duty as an officer with the US Army Corps of Engineering. He later obtained the position of Assistant State Traffic Engineer, and in 1992, after 30 years of service with NCDOT, Mr. Sessoms received the state’s highest honor from then Governor James B. Hunt-the Order of the Longleaf Pine. Mr. Sessoms also had a career with the North Carolina Army National Guard and obtained the rank of Colonel. He was a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, and completed a course from the National Defense University. For his service in the National Guard, Mr. Sessoms received the Army Commendation Medal. Additionally, Charlie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Garner, the NC Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the NC State Retired Employees Association, the NC National Guard Association and the civil engineering honor fraternity, Chi Epsilon. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie C. “CC” Sessoms and Gertrude S. Sessoms. He is survived by his wife, June W. Sessoms of Garner; two sons, Charlie C. “Chuck” Sessoms, IV of Raleigh and Mark A. Sessoms of Cary; a granddaughter, Lindsay Michelle Heck and husband, Trent; a great-grandson, Jaydan Adair Simmons; and a great-granddaughter, Parker Ashton Heck, all of Indiana. Charlie was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home prior to the service. Flowers are welcome.
