RALEIGH - Walter Phillips Brown, 88, Raleigh native and union leader crossed the bar Wednesday. Graduated from Broughton High School and proudly served in the US Navy during WW II. Business Manager of Local 785, UA of Plumbers and pipe fitters for 25 years and former President of Raleigh Central Labor Union. He was very active in the Democratic party working in local and national campaigns. He served on the NC State Apprentice Council for 10 years and fought against the food tax and lobbied for the right for all employees to organize. He was very active at St. Marks and Trinity UMC. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling the world and retiring to North Myrtle Beach. He was a good Father and will be missed. We love you, Dad! A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Surviving are his daughters, Karen Waller and husband, David of Raleigh and Mary Pat Zygula and husband Dennis of Ormond Beach, FL; sons, Howard Brown pf Raleigh and William David Brown and wife, Leigh of Chapel Hill; eight grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
