William Archibald Sherratt

April 21, 1914 - January 26, 2012 Raleigh - William Archibald Sherratt, 97 passed away January 26, 2012 at his Springmoor home in Raleigh, NC surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years Evelyn Edward McCullers Sherratt. Bill was born on April 21, 1914 to the late William and Rachel Dew Sherratt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Glen-Nor High School in Glenolden Pennsylvania and earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1936. He began his professional career as the Chief Engineer of a company in Dividing Creek, New Jersey, served in WW II in the United States Army Ordinance Corps and retired as a Lt. Col. He was a licensed Mechanical Engineer with the Department of the Navy and retired in 1974 after serving as Director of the Engineering Division, Public Works Department, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. Prior to their move to Springmoor in Raleigh, Bill and Evelyn lived for 40 years in New Bern, NC. Bill served on the Board of Deacons at the First Presbyterian Church and served for 26 years as Chairman, Board of Trustees, New Bern Craven County Public Library. He is survived by two sons William E. Sherratt and his wife Cindy of Raleigh and Thomas A. Sherratt of Durham, two granddaughters Kimbra Dillon and her husband Mark of Clayton, Corey and her husband Matt Wishart of Raleigh and four great-grandchildren Isabella, Madeline, Cole and Ava Grace Wishart of Raleigh. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday January 30th 2012 at the Mount Zion United Methodist Church 15772 NC 50 North, Garner, NC with burial to follow in the Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Elwyn Institute, 111 Elwyn Road, Elwyn, Pennsylvania 19063 in honor of Richard Bartlet Gundesen his nephew.
