William James Monroe, Jr. of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021. “Jim” was born in Hamlet, NC on October 5,1948 and is preceded in death by his parents William James Monroe, Sr., Marian Harrill Monroe; and sister, Jeanne Monroe Whitten. Raised in Raleigh, he graduated from Broughton High School and spent four years in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in England. After returning to Raleigh, he received a degree in Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1973 and started his career in publishing and real estate. A remarkable writer and intuitive journalist, he founded Builder Broker Journal that became the top real estate magazine in The Triangle area for years. Always the life of the party and ready for a good laugh, Jim had a penchant for all things creative, philosophical banter, a stellar concert on the porch, and a colorful sunset at the beach. He is survived by his sister, Kim Monroe Fowler (Ricky) of Boydton,VA; his daughter, Greyson Monroe McGrail (Rob) of Raleigh; and sons, William James Monroe, III (Kristine) of Marietta, GA, and Buckley McNeill Monroe (Jean) of Raleigh; as well as six grandchildren, Lillian, Mills, Rex, Elizabeth, Buckley Allen and Robin. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. Following the graveside, attendees are invited to join the family for a reception at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home of Raleigh.
