It is with much sadness that the children of Willie Mae Doster Knott announce the death of their mother. She was known to family and close friends as Ducky, a nickname given to her by her grandmother. Willie Mae was a native of Raleigh and the second daughter of James Marion Doster and Halsie Lela Watkins. After her marriage to Alvis Lindsey Knott. Sr., they lived in Washington D.C. where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They returned to Raleigh to raise their family. After returning to Raleigh, Willie Mae worked for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. She later worked for the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association. Eventually she returned to the state at the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
Willie Mae was active in local Democrat politics and served as a precinct chairman for many years. She was involved in many political campaigns both on the state and national levels. She was especially successful with her get out the vote efforts. She was a member of the Raleigh Garden Club and was active in the Mordecai Citizens Action Committee. After retirement she enjoyed her home in Surf City
and devoted much of her time to protecting sea turtles.
