Winfred Crowell Almond

March 23, 1931 — July 21, 2016

Winfred Crowell Almond, 85, died peacefully on July 21, 2016 at his Raleigh home after a prolonged illness. Born March 23, 1931 in Aberdeen, N.C, he was the oldest son of the late Marshall Crowell and Mary Alice Almond.  He is survived by daughter Lynne A. Allen and husband Christopher Allen, two granddaughters Aimee Allen Sloan and Christopher Pittarelli; Sarah Allen Kelly and husband Christopher Kelly; two greatgrandchildren, Sophia Grace and Alexander Pittarelli; sister Judy Hodgin and Bill; sister-in-law Emma Jean Almond; and numerous nieces and nephews. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Korea, Japan, and later Tampa, Florida where his daughter was born.  After his honorable discharge he moved to Raleigh.  He was a professional machinist, a trade he acquired while in the military.  He owned and operated Machine Tools, Inc. for a number of years and later worked at North Carolina State University in the School of Engineering fabricating prototype tools and machine parts. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM Monday July 25 at Temple Baptist Church with the graveside service following at Ashley Heights Baptist Church in Aberdeen, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Transitions Hospice Care at 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or Temple Baptist Church, 1417 Clifton Street, NC 27604.
