Yvonne Jean Boston

Yvonne was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on December 17, 1934, to Floyd Elmer Boston and Eva Josephine (Larsen) Boston. She had two younger brothers, Ronald Floyd Boston, of Muskegon, and George Wayne Boston. She attended Beach Elementary School, then Muskegon Heights High School. Yvonne earned an AA degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University, then married R. Boyd Bosma, II, of Muskegon, then went on to teach 3rd grade, while living in Redford Township, Michigan. Yvonne and Boyd had 5 children; Kimball David Bosma, of Staunton, Virginia (b. 1956-d. 2014), Susan B. Potter (b. 1958), Barbara Bosma Garlock (b. 1960-d. 2013), John Hans Bosma (b. 1962), and Laurel Ann Bosma (b. 1968). In 1969, the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia. After the marriage ended, Yvonne returned to work, as a secretary for the a Office of Indian Education, Department of Education. In 1981, she married Robert L. Shields and they moved to Annandale, Virginia. Yvonne returned to college, at the age of 50, and graduated with distinction as an English major from George Mason University, in 1987. She then resumed working for the government, starting with the Bureau of Justice and Government Statistics, and then the Drug Enforcement Agency. Yvonne and Robert separated in 1990. In 2000, Yvonne retired to Cary, North Carolina, where she met many new friends and helped take care of grandchildren. She edited books on occasion. Yvonne loved to make jokes and laugh, read voraciously, walk the trail behind her condo, watch foreign films, make mandalas, and spoil her cats. On March 1, 2022, she passed away at the age of 87. She is survived by her many friends, grandchildren, and great grand children, and her long term partner, Robert L. Shields, who all miss her dearly. Yvonne’s memorial is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh North Carolina 27607 at 2:00 pm.
